The Chattaway near Downtown St Petersburg

The Chattaway Just South of Downtown St Pete

Published on 12/17/21: Given we recently posted about the Oakdale Christmas House and Mullet’s Fish Camp, let’s make it a trifecta with The Chattaway in St Pete! All three of these are within a mile of each other.

The Chattaway has been a family run eatery in St. Pete since 1951. Colt and I were lucky enough to meet the longtime owner, Jillian Frers on our recent visit. She’s incredibly friendly and seemingly has as much energy at 89 as Colt has at six. Rather remarkable. Her secret to staying young? Of course “eating at The Chattaway!”.

Ms Frers aka Lady Chattaway – Owner of the Chattaway

Ms Frers’ children and grandchildren help run the business and consider the rest of the staff their ‘extended family’. Together they’ve created two distinct areas at the restaurant. First, a large patio area with white string lights stretching 50+ feet and a stage for live music. Second, an indoor area setup for “high tea”. No matter the area you choose, note the restaurant is CASH ONLY. There’s an ATM onsite.

You’ll quickly see that Ms Frers (aka Lady Chattaway) brought her love of England with her when she moved from across the pond, sharing her heritage, especially in the tea room.

Schedule a Tea with friends at the Chattaway

My wife got a kick out of hearing that one of the most popular Chattaway activities is scheduling a ‘tea’ with a group of friends. Simply call ahead and let Amanda or Leah know how many to prepare. Suspect Amy (wife) is booking her’s shortly for a book club.
Food-wise, the Chattaway is well known for their burgers (award winning), fish & chips, lobster chowder and people give a 👍🏻 to their onion rings. We also certainly enjoyed their wings and Caesar salad.

Reservations and walk-Ins are both fine. They offer take out and catering services, plus the space is ideal hosting large gatherings and is also very kid friendly. For inquiries on hosting a large event, simply contact Debbie Kitto at the restaurant.

Mike Braswell is a Tampa Bay Realtor, serving St Petersburg, Clearwater, all nearby beaches and more. Mike started LovingStPete in October of 2020 after a difficult year took its toll on local businesses. After being cooped up for portions of 2020 (lockdown) Mike and his son decided to get out and explore, helping spread the good word about the local area he loves so much. Often even doing gift card giveaways to support local. LovingStPete is now followed by over 48 thousand people on social media! The majority of posts are informative on fun parks, activities, day trips, great restaurants, and in general provide a comprehensive tour of the area!

Soon after receiving his bachelors in Management Information Systems, Mike developed and then operated a vacation rental advertising business for 10+ years as CEO/Owner. The business was eventually acquired by VRBO. Mike has earned the trust of many large clients over the years. Such as NFL, Wynn Resorts, Blue Cross Blue Shield, VISA, Genuine Parts Company (NAPA Auto Parts), AT&T, and other Fortune 500 companies.

When not spending time with his beautiful wife and energetic son, Mike enjoys boating and is also an avid tennis player. An interesting fact about Mike is that he grew up on an avocado farm with over 15 varieties, some of which you can find in our local Publix/Winn Dixie as his dad still farms the same farm at 87 years old!
