Maximo Park in St Petersburg

Friends had a birthday party at Maximo Park this past weekend. While we couldn’t make the celebration, they always choose great places for events, so we had to check it out! Sure enough, it’s fantastic, just as the Google Reviews say.
First, it’s waterfront. If you haven’t noticed, I gravitate to anything on the water. 🏝 Just seems to make whatever it is, better! In this case we’re talking nature trails, disc/frisbee golf, a large shaded playground, observation deck, many picnic ‘shelters’ (covered). All of this is essentially on the water. Plus fishing spots, small beach area and 7 boat ramps.
I’m still often surprised how well our city parks are maintained & preserved. Today was no different at Maximo.

Per the website of St. Petersburg Parks & Recreation:

“This beautiful park is the largest of the City’s four archaeological sites at 70 acres. […] The park contains educational signs throughout describing the tribes that once inhabited the area.” […] “The land contained within Maximo Park was first occupied by Native Americans at least 4500 years ago during the Late Archaic period. Excavations by the University of South Florida in 1973 recovered shell tools and food remains of these early inhabitants in the southern portion of the park[…] Maximo Park was part of a much larger village that extended east along Pinellas Point and included extensive shell middens, at least one burial mound, and a large platform mound. This was a major town site of the Tocobaga Indians, historic descendents of the Safety Harbor culture.”

These are some pics from our visit yesterday after school. Accidentally used portrait mode on our father/son pic. #BlurryColt
PS: Happy Birthday Madeline!
